Tupac Musical Hits Broadway This Summer + Rapper Eyed Role In 'Star Wars'?

The Tupac Shakur-inspired musical Holler If You Here Me has secured a spot on Broadway at the Palace Theater beginning in June, reports Variety. Led by director Kenny Leon and produced in part by the late rapper's mother Afeni Shakur, the production is said to be tapping into the African-American demographic.

The non-biographical production will be based on the work of the late rapper and is described as an "anti-violence" and "unconditional love story" played out to Tupac's music.

The news hits as an interesting bit of movie trivia is making its way around the net, reporting that Shakur auditioned to play the role of Jedi Master Mace Windu in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

According to former Death Row Records engineer Rick Clifford, the legendary rapper went to a reading with George Lucas but, as we now know, the part went to Samuel L. Jackson. While Clifford didn't pinpoint the time of the audition, production on Episode I began June 1997-- less than a year after Shakur's untimely death.

"'Pac found out that I worked for Brian Austin Green, who was on 90210, then he found out I [worked on] some movies, so we always talked about his film career and stuff," Clifford said. "He was telling me that he was supposed to read for George Lucas and them."

"They wanted him to be a Jedi," he continued. "I'm serious. Samuel L. [Jackson] got Tupac's part. [Tupac] said [to me], 'Old man, keep your fingers crossed.' He said, 'I've got three movies coming up. One of them, I've got to read for George Lucas.'"

Prior to Shakur's audition, the rapper locked down roles in Juice, Poetic Justice, Above The Rim and more, while Bullet, Gridlock'd and Gang Related were released posthumously.

Back in November, a biopic on the star was given the green light with Afeni serving as executive producer.
