Armed with a spitfire, dry wit, Marla also starred in the '70s sitcom The Jeffersons.

Armed with a spitfire dry wit, African-American actress/comedienne Marla Gibbs showed up first in the '70s sitcom The Jefferson. A decade and international celebrity later Gibbs was the star of her own show, 227, where she played sharp-tongued housewife Mary Jenkins. Initially the sitcom started as a play created and produced by Gibbs’ daughter Angela Elayne Gibbs and transformed into a full-fledge series equipped with a host of characters. Now you may be able to catch Gibbs in Centric’s The First Family as Grandma Eddy.
