Monie Love was a known hip hop act in her native UK, but features on her mentor Queen Latifah’s Grammy Award winning single "Ladies First," and De La Soul's hit single "Buddy" in 1989 brought her popularity in the U.S., which led to a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records. She released two albums, including her 1991 debut, Down To Earth, which spawned two, Grammy-nominated hits, "Monie in the Middle" and "It's a Shame (My Sister)" featuring Ultra Naté.
