  • Bobby Caldwell is quite possibly one the blackest White singers in music. The New York native, has been in entertainment for over 30 years, but he's best known for his 1978 classic "What You Won't Do for Love"
  • After successful stints as a background singer for Steely Dan and the front man of the Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald proved he could hold his own when he launched his solo career in 1982. The five time Grammy Award winner landed a slew of R&B hits with the likes of James Ingram and Patti Labelle, thanks in part to his soulful, breathy baritone.
  • UK singer Joss Stone's 2003 cover of The White Stripes' "Fell In Love With A Boy' was a soulful debut marked by production from The Root's Questlove and legendary soul singer, Betty Wright.
  • Before catching sight of his charmingly boyish mushroom cut, fans heard Jon B's voice first. His 1995 debut single, "Someone To Love" featuring Babyface set the tone---a black tone---for his string of R&B hits. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that he seems to love the sistahs.
  • Let's face it Lisa Stansfield has ALWAYS gotten more love from the R&B community than any other music listening body. Her string of chart topping late 80s hits---"All Around the World," "You Can't Deny It," "All Woman"---solidified her place in Black music world.
  • Before Pink tapped into her true musical spirit, the Pennsylvania bred singer was 100% R&B. Her 2000 debut album, Can't Take Me Home, featured the soulful pop hits "There You Go" and "Most Girls."
  • Before the world caught sight of the late Amy Whinehouse's pale tattooed skin, her voice drove many to think she was over a darker persuasion. Her 2003 debut album, FRANK, was a collection of jazzy standards that found the singer in much lighter territory.
  • Robin Thicke had an album under his belt by the time he released his second album, The Evolution of Robin Thicke, in 2006. But few people knew what he looked like. "Introduced" by the 2005 single, "Wanna Love You Girl" featuring Pharrell Williams, the son of actor Alan Thicke was instantly pegged Black by listeners.
  • Teena Marie...is an introduction or an explanation really needed for the Queen of Ivory Soul? The late singer made a musical niche for herself as the female protegee of funk music bad boy Rick James. Originally signed to Motown Records, label head Berry Gordy decided to not put her face on the cover of her 1979 debut album, Wild and Peaceful, a move that led many radio programmers to assume she was African-American.
  • If you heard Little Dragon's music, without a visual, chances are you would think the group is led by a sistah. But such is not the case. Fronted by lead singer Yukimi Nagano, the Swedish band has been a noted name on the electronic funk scene since 2007.
