  • 1974: Hyman kicks off a two-year stint leading a band called Phyllis Hyman and the P/H Factor.
  • 1975: Hyman is discovered by music industry veteran Sid Maurer and former Epic Records promoter Fred Frank.
  • 1976: Composer Norman Connors offers Hyman a spot on his album, You Are My Starship, as a guest singer. Their cover of The Stylistics’ classic song, “Betcha By Golly Wow” became their first single to hit the R&B charts.
  • 1977: Hyman releases her debut self-titled album
  • 1979: On Arista Records, Hyman released her third and fourth albums, ‘Somewhere in My Lifetime’ and ‘You Know How To Love Me,’ both of which became the most popular albums of her career
  • 1981: Hyman makes her Broadway debut in the musical, “Sophisticated Ladies.” She remained apart of the show for two years, earning a Tony Award nomination and the Theatre World Award for Best Newcomer
  • 1987: Phyllis Hyman recorded "Black and Blue" as a duet with Barry Manilow on his album, Swing Street
  • 1988: Hyman appears in various movies, such as 'School Daze' and 'The Kill Reflex'
  • 1991: Phyllis Hyman releases her most popular album, ‘Prime of My Life,’ which included her first number one R&B hit, ‘Don't Wanna Change the World.’ The album was certified Gold in 1992.
  • 1995: Hyman sadly commits suicide. Her label releases her album, 'I Refuse To Be Lonely' posthumously

Legacy Of A Diva: Phyllis Hyman

1991: Phyllis Hyman releases her most popular album, ‘Prime of My Life,’ which included her first number one R&B hit, ‘Don't Wanna Change the World.’ The album was certified Gold in 1992.
