  • 1980: Vandross made his debut singing lead with the group Change on the single “The Glow of Love,” he also signed a solo recording contract with Epic Records
  • 1981: Vandross released his debut album, Never Too Much, which peaked at #1 on the Billboard R&B charts and went double platinum.
  • 1987: Luther Vandross wins his first award at the Soul Train Music Awards for Best Album of the Year-Male for “Give Me A Reason”
  • 1989: “Here and Now” becomes Vandross’ first single to chart on the Billboard Pop Charts in the top ten
  • 1989: Vandross performs at London’s Wembley Arena, selling out 10 "standing room only" concerts during his international tour
  • 2001: Vandross signs with Clive Davis’s J Records, releasing his self-titled album, which produces the hits “I’d Rather” and “Take You Out”
  • 2002: Vandross gave one of his final concert performances during The BK Got Soul Tour
  • 2004: Luther Vandross wins four Grammy Awards for his album, Dance With My Father, including Best R&B Album and Song of the Year for the album's title track
  • 2005: Vandross died on July 1, from an apparent heart attack. He was 54.
