Tyson Beckford's nephew is facing criminal charges after stealing a truck and crashing it into a bus, leaving the driver dead and four injured.
Domonic Whilby, 22, was arrested immediately following the incident that unfolded early Wednesday morning in Manhattan's Meatpacking District after a night of hard partying. According to reports, the young man was in attendance at New York City's 1 OAK nightclub with Beckford and his uncle's Victoria's Secret girlfriend Shanina Shaik before things went awry.
Sources say Whilby, who was drunk and high on drugs, was escorted out of the party around 3:30 a.m. for getting to "handsy" with some of the female patrons. He later entered the nearby Dream Downtown hotel, but was soon ejected after passing out in the lobby.
After failing to find a limo and sneaking into an apartment building, Whilby then decided to steal a truck with the keys still in the ignition left in a parking garage and sped off toward 7th Avenue and 14th Street where he collided with the bus.
49-year-old William Pena, a 17-year MTA employee, was identified as the victim. He leaves behind a wife and 14-year-old daughter.
Authority Chairman Thomas Prendergast released the following statement: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Pena's family, and we are working closely with law enforcement to ensure the perpetrator of this crime is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
Four others were injured and treated at local area hospitals. Whilby was slightly injured and taken to Bellevue Hospital.
Whilby has been charged with manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, criminal trespass two counts of grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, criminal mischief and three counts of felony assault.
