The 2013-14 season of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater opened with a bang Wednesday night (Dec. 4) at New York City Center with the help of a few famous faces around the dance, fashion and entertainment world.
Being Mary Jane star and Honorary Co-Chair Gabrielle Union assisted Artistic Director Robert Battle in presenting the Opening Night Gala Benefit, which helped raised more than $2.4 million for future works and Alvin Ailey's educational programs for young people.
Additional co-chairs included BET CEO Debra Lee, Simin Allison & in memory Herb Allison, Kathryn & Kenneth Chenault, Daria L. Foster & Erich j. Wallach, Agnes & Gerald Hassell and Joan & Sandy Weill.
The show opened with the premiere of Chroma from multi award-winning British choreographer Wayne McGregor and closed with a repertory favorite, Revelations, which was accompanied by live music.
Following the production, the celebration continued at the gala party in the Hilton New York's Grand Ballroom with more than 1,000 guests in attendance that included Joan Smalls, Carolyn Murphy, Taye Diggs, Marcus Samuelsson, Tristan "Mack Wilds," Jessye Norman and others.
This season marks the 25th year since the passing of company founder Alvin Ailey. Shows will continue through the holidays in New York and travel to 23 cities across the country beginning in February.
