The performers in Thursday's parade handled the backlash like pros

While you were sneaking a taste of Thanksgiving dinner, the cast of the award-winning Broadway musical Kinky Boots was fighting off criticism for their performance at Macy's annual parade. Apparently, in 2013, Americans are still uncomfortable with any themes that might disrupt their definition of "normal."

The show centers on a shoe factory owner and drag queen who team up to produce footwear to save the sinking business. As the cast performed the musical's finale "Raise You Up/Just Be," some viewers deemed the number too inappropriate for the event's wholesome image. And of course, social media was all over the controversy.

One Twitter user wrote, "Outraged that Kinky Boots performed in the Macy's Parade. Now I have to explain homophobia to my kids."

Another stated, "I'm no prude, but parents shouldn't have to explain 'kinky boots' to their children at 9:30 on thanksgiving morning."

In response, the show's Tony Award-winning star Billy Porter and a few of his castmates headed to Macy's on Black Friday to shop...in full drag.

Kinky Boots
' co-creator Harvey Fierstein also offered up the following statement:

"I'm so proud that the cast of Kinky Boots brought their message of tolerance and acceptance to America's parade. Ten years ago I was humbled to ride a float dressed as Mrs. Claus, and it was the thrill of a lifetime. Congratulations to Macy's, on leading the world, not only with your salesmanship, but also your humanity."

And to top things off, Macy's released their own statement to Page Six:

“Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has always spotlighted the best of Broadway since the ’60′s, and this year is no exception. As 2013′s Tony award-winning best musical, ‘Kinky Boots’ is not only a hit with Broadway fans, but Black Friday shoppers… Please have them call us and we’ll set them up with our personal shoppers.”

Checkmate.
