The Young Boy Died Friday From Severe Injuries

*UPDATE: Adrian Peterson's 2-year-old son died Friday (Oct. 11) in a Sioux Falls, S.D. hospital from a brutal beating at the hands of his mother's boyfriend, police confirm. Additional charges are being filed on top of aggravated felony assault and battery of an infant.


Peterson released the following statement:


"I really appreciate all the support that I've been receiving from fans, the Vikings organization. This is a private matter and I would ask you all to please just respect my privacy and not ask at all about the situation at hand."


At the time of the statement, Peterson said he still expects to play in Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.

NFL star Adrian Peterson took off from practice Thursday afternoon (Oct. 10) for a "tragic" personal situation involving his 2-year-old son.


According to TMZ, the Minnesota Vikings' running back arrived in South Dakota after receiving word that the young boy was in critical condition following a beating from his mother's boyfriend.


The child was found unresponsive when authorities arrived at the apartment just after 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The boy is said to have severe head injuries.


Joseph Patterson
, 27, is reportedly in police custody and has been charged with aggravated felony assault and battery of an infant.


While the story continues to unfold, Sports Illustrated reports Peterson is expected to practice on Friday in preparation for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.
