Marques Brownlee builds online empire through YouTube tutorial

At only 20 years old, Marques Brownlee is taking over the cyber tech world.

Through his YouTube channel “MKBHD,” the young tech-savvy expert, who perfected the art of explaining technologies to the average consumer, has acquired over 1.5 million subscribers and nearly 130 million total views on his 640-plus videos.

In a nutshell, Brownlee is a pretty big deal. Even former Google VP Vic Gundotra called him "the best technology reviewer on the planet right now."

For more than five years, Brownlee has been self-producing and perfecting his craft of video reviews.

He is now a college senior at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. In an interview with Business Insider, Brownlee said he always had a love for technology, and was sort of reared in it, as his father works as a information systems and programming. Brownlee, however, had more of an interest in consumer electronics.

“It was kind of a background hobby; I didn’t have a reason to tell anyone when I first started making the videos,” Brownlee said.

When he entered high school, the then-teen purchased a laptop and began researching on how to learn tricks and customization by watching tutorials, which ultimately inspired to make tutorials of his own.

But his empire was a work in progress, he admits.

“Back then, it was all one take,” he said. “So when I’d make a video, I’d open the software, press record, talk two or three minutes to explain whatever I needed to explain, and I’d just stop and upload it to YouTube. That was it.

“I could make multiple videos in a day, but now, the videos are much more elaborate.”

And the hard work is paying off, as his hobby has turned into a money-generating business through Google Adsense.

Even with his success thus far, Brownlee says that his main focus is to finish college, but he will continue to make videos as long as it’s still deemed fun.
