Women of color have long heard that they should cast their net wide when it comes to dating outside their race. Some have chosen to stick it out until they find a good Black man, while others argue that there simply aren’t enough of them to go around.
One website, BlackGirlTravel.com, is not only empowering African-American women to travel, but to do so in hopes of finding love over the pond. Founder Fleacé Weaver says her mission is to empower Black women to have “options” when looking for the ideal companion.
“I have done a lot of research and talked to a lot of women in this country, and what I’m hearing is: You can’t find dates, you can’t find mates, you can’t find husbands,” she says in a video on the site’s official YouTube channel. “And I kind of thought about, like, well why is that? And as I started talking to [women] it’s like, they’re only dating black guys. Don’t shoot me!”
Weaver sites 2008 Census data that suggests that even if every Black man chose to partner with a Black woman, there would still be 1.5 million Black women left mate-less.
So what is a girl to do? According to Weaver, she should be looking else where...in Europe.
Of course, the argument that there aren’t enough Black men to go around is no new talking point in the Black community. However, the businesswoman says that African-American women need to start opening up their mind to the possibility of being down with the swirl, or risk being single forever. However in an interview with Buzzfeeed, Weaver made it clear that BlackGirlTravel.com is not suggesting that Black women only date White men, but should be open to dating all men.
There appears to be a cyber movement of blogs and websites from a collective of travel aficionados encouraging women of color to consider dating internationally from BeyondBlackWhite.com to Black Women In Europe. It’s not such a farfetched idea, considering Black men are already twice as likely to date outside their race.
But why do African-American women have to date outside their race internationally and not in their own backyard?
Still, the concept in itself is one Black women should consider. No point waiting around for a man that may not be out there. Broadening your scope wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
Do you think Black women should date more in Europe?
