Do Women Really Think Having Babies Are Like ‘Cash Registers’?

Writer Gerren Keith Gaynor says Wendy Williams' comment about Evelyn Lozado's newborn son trivializes motherhood

Children are not commodities. The idea that having a child somehow changes a woman’s circumstances is one that is jarring to say the least, yet somehow Wendy Williams thought it’d be funny to refer to  Evelyn Lozada’s newborn son as a “cash register” because of the father’s reportedly $142 million-dollar fortune.

Though Williams was only doing her job as an entertainer, her “joke” reveals a rather disheartening opinion some women actually hold as it relates to being mothers...that having a child with someone with money means you’ve somehow hit the lottery. And sadly there’s some truth to it. We see it all the time in Hollywood, where the ex-wives and ex-girlfriends of famous ballers and entertainers are awarded sizable amounts of child or spousal support, in which they, from the public’s perspective, live a charmed life.

But there’s far more to motherhood than popping out the child of wealthy man just to enjoy the finer things in life. In fact, that’s not what motherhood is about at all. Sadly, despite this fact some women seem to hold on to this convoluted idea that a baby is a one-way ticket to a comfortable lifestyle. But money isn’t the only way children are used to achieve some type of goal. Some women go as far as trying to have a baby as a means of keeping a man. While this is something that hopefully isn’t common, it’s a sad reality that unfortunately exists.

A woman’s body, nor the child she produces, is not a cash cow. It is not to be reduced as a means of taking advantage of people for the benefit of themselves, and jokes like Williams’ makes a mockery of motherhood and what it means to be a mother. Being a mom has nothing to do with checks, but has everything to do with the actual child. The only requirement for raising a good child is to be a good mom. No man or amount of money can do that.

While having a child with a man who has money may seem like a “come up,” it’s not the ingredient to a happy life. What really matters is the love between a mother and her child, and hopefully the love (and respect) she has for the father of her child. So let’s do everyone a favor and put the “cash register” talk to an end.
