Love was infectious in 2013. There’s no way to substantiate, but we think the image of President Obama and Michelle Obama’s marriage along with Jay Z and Beyoncé has the hip-hop community wanting that "power couple" type of love.
Engagements were plentiful this year and while some were not surprising, others were downright jaw-dropping. We’re raising our glass to congratulate the happy couples who’ve pledged to wed and be together until death do them part. Love never goes out of style.
Evelyn Lozada and Carl Crawford
The Basketball Wives star found love once again in Los Angeles Dodgers player Carl Crawford. The relatively lowkey couple got engaged on Christmas Day following the announcement that they'd be expecting a baby in the new year. Crawford surprisingly presented Lozada with a 14.5-carat diamond ring. This will no doubt be a grand wedding.
Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade
Gabrielle Union hung in there through a rollercoaster ride with Dwyane Wade’s first wife Siohvaughn. Despite all of the drama, Wade didn’t give up on marriage. He proposed to the Being Mary Jane star before Christmas. Four years of dating paid off in the long run. It’s always better to work out all the kinks and issues of a relationship before heading down the altar.
Future and Ciara
This was an unlikely couple. Future was fairly unknown prior to last year while Ciara has been in the spotlight for years. Future made headlines over child support drama with one of his kid’s mothers. He has three kids by three different women. And if rumors prove to be true, Ciara is well on her way to being the fourth “baby mama.” Within less than a year, Future dated and proposed to the R&B songstress. They seem happy, which is all that matters. Sometimes love conquers all.
Kelly Rowland and Tim Witherspoon
We’re super excited for Kelly Rowland! She’s been through a lot with men. From revealing in “Dirty Laundry” one of her exes physically abused her to breaking off an engagement years ago, it’s Kelly’s time to find her peace with manager Tim Witherspoon. Technically we don’t know how long they’ve been engaged since they’ve kept their relationship on the low. But she did reveal on The Queen Latifah Show he proposed on Skype.
Nene and Greg Leakes
Nene divorced Greg with the quickness after 13 years of marriage once she felt he wasn’t acting right. But he came back for his woman! The couple remarried and seem stronger than ever. Cheers to them for not being afraid to give it another whirl.
Christina Milian and Jas Prince
Milian had a nasty divorce with singer/producer/writer extraordinaire Dream. She’s found love again with record label CEO Jas Prince.
Kevin Durant and Monica Wright
Let’s talk about this adorable athletic couple. NBA star meets WNBA star, date, fall in love and get engaged. The two kept their relationship under wraps. But in 2011 Durant tweeted, “Or maybe I need a basketball playing girlfriend...hmmm...lol. monica wright where r u (love and basketball)." It was an obvious reference to the movie Love and Basketball whose main character was named Monica Wright. Coincidence or fate?
Bobbi Kristina and Nick Gordon
Bobbi Kristina and Nick weren’t a likely couple considering they were raised as "brother" and "sister." The late Whitney Houston had unofficially adopted Nick and he was part of the family. After Houston’s death, Bobbi and Nick began an on-again, off-again relationship. When their engagement was announced, they wanted everyone to stop saying Nick was her brother because it implied their relationship was incestious. We haven’t heard much from this couple lately, but we hope they’re well.
AJ Calloway and Dionne Walker
AJ and Free were a phenomenal pair (strictly platonic) on BET’s 106 & Park, but he found his better half in Dionne Walker. The two wed over the summer and welcomed their baby girl, Amy Belle, in August.
Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker
Kandi found love in reality TV producer Todd Tucker. Phaedra Parks introduced the two when the ladies took a trip to South Africa. The rumor mill is buzzing that the couple were wed in Mexico in October, but only time will tell. As long as Kandi’s happy, we’re happy.
Joseline and Stevie J
This couple breaks up just to make up. The messiness of their relationship played out on national television for everyone to see. Last season on Love and Hip Hop Atlanta Joseline proposed, but Stevie didn’t seem too thrilled. Well, perhaps Joseline made an honest man out of Stevie. In August, the couple confirmed they had married.
