Viola Davis Discusses Marriage & Motherhood

Only one word comes to mind when looking at Viola Davis' ESSENCE magazine cover: flawless. The radiant Oscar nominee takes over the glossy's October 2013 issue as she discusses her biggest roles in life-- wife and mother.

When speaking about playing parent to her 2-year-old adopted daughter Genesis, she described the responsibility as "five hundred million joys and a hundred million heartbreaks every single day." And with so much hoopla surrounding Black hair, Davis is making it her mission to get her little girl to love her locks.

"There's not one woman in America who does not care about her hair. But we give it way too much value," she explained. "We deprive ourselves of things, we use it to destroy each other, we'll look at a child and judge a mother and her sense of motherhood by the way the child's hair looks. I am not going to traumatize my child about her hair. I want her to love her hair."

In the "Be Beautiful" issue, Davis also touches on her marriage with actor Julius Tennon and their heaven-sent union.

"I asked for a husband who was emotionally available, someone who was older, someone who maybe had a family before," she said. "I like older men. Someone from the South. Someone who loves God more than he loves himself."

"I met my husband three and a half weeks later, an ex-football player from Austin, Texas. On one our first dates, he took me to church."

Davis can be seen next in the crime thriller Prisoners-- alongside Terrence Howard, Hugh Jackman, Jack Gyllenhaal and Maria Bello-- out Sept. 20.
