Picking up your phone after a few drinks can be a slippery slope. What starts out as a brilliant idea to drunk text a former flame or potential new mate can quickly turn into a disaster the moment you press 'send.'
In Centric's new relationship series "According To Him & Her", we'll discuss the liabilities of shooting out messages while intoxicated and the weight your words hold after a night of sipping. While results may vary, chances are it's best to keep your hands off your phone.
Fortunately, there are ways to sidestep the communication faux pas and come out of your drunken stupor unscathed. Consider these five tips to avoid texting under the influence.
There's an app for that. If you have a smartphone, head over to your app store and download a program to avoid the possibility of a drunk text. Drunk Text Savior for iPhones and Drunk Text Preventer for Androids are just two of many apps that work to keep you out of trouble.
Practice the "write and release" method. Instead of letting your liquid courage take over after downing a couple drinks, write down the numbers of people you want to avoid texting (or calling) and erase them from your phone. You'll thank yourself in the morning.
Assign a designated phone holder. Call it a sign of the times, but in addition to a designated driver, some nights call for a designated phone holder. If you have a bad habit of texting the wrong person while intoxicated, have a friend take your phone before the problems begin.
Leave the cell behind. Keeping your phone at home might sound like a nightmare, but what's worse is compromising your character with a detrimental text. Steer clear of the shame and leave your cell on your nightstand. Surely someone in your group will have a phone if necessary.
Embrace sobriety. If you're a serial drunk texter (and none of the aforementioned tips seem to work), it might be time to put down the booze to keep from sending out the wrong message. There are only so many times you can blame it on the alcohol.
