Staying focused at work can be a difficult task when you’re obliged to remember a million and one things all at once, all while juggling various projects and tasks. Staring at a computer screen all day can often have you feeling like a deer in headlights. But staying alert at work doesn’t have to be so complicated, especially when in it’s in your control.
Here are some simple foods and drinks you should keep at your desk to ensure a more productive day:
Coffee or Tea: Though coffee often gets a bad rep for its crash-and-burn side effect, it (along with tea) gives you an instant boost in alertness and energy. Its caffeine also gives you a boost in cognitive performance, concentration and focus. Just be sure to drink in moderation.
Oranges: Citrus fruits like oranges are not only a great source of Vitamin C, but just sniffing it will give you a kick in alertness. Oranges are also said to strengthen your emotional body, encouraging a general feeling of joy, well-being and cheerfulness. You can also try other citrus fruits like a grapefruit.
Dark Chocolate: Dark chocolate contains compounds in cocoa that produces a surge in blood flow to the brain. It also contains phenylethylamine (PEA), which is the same chemical your brain creates when you feel like you're falling in love. PEA encourages your brain to release endorphins, so eating dark chocolate will make you feel happier. Now you have an excuse to keep sweets nearby your desk.
Walnuts: Walnuts have potential health benefits in the area of memory and cognitive function. Walnuts are a great source of omega 3, which is a fatty acid required by our body for cell growth and immune function. Low omega 3 intake has been linked to depression and decline in cognitive function.
