The love story between Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, long before the White House, comes to life in the film Southside With You.
Starring Tika Sumpter as Michelle and Parker Sawyers as Barack, a new clip shows the political power couple's encounter in the summer of 1989. Michelle (then Michelle Robinson) was a young attorney, while Barack was a new summer associate.
In the scene, a very charming Barack tries to convince a reluctant Michelle to go out on a date.
"How's it gonna look if I just swoop in and start dating the first cute Black guy who walks through the firm’s doors?" Michelle says.
A determined Barack doesn't back down without a fight.
"You think I'm cute?" he asks.
Writer and director Richard Tanne says the president and first lady are likely aware of the film that chronicles their first date.
“I’ve heard from pretty reliable second-hand sources that they are aware of the movie, that they are curious to see it, and also, I think, rightfully baffled that it exists,” Tanne said.
Southside With You debuts at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 24.
