Lamar Odom's road to recovery is still filled with its fair share of twists and turns, and it seems things may never be the same.
An insider close to the situation told PEOPLE, "Lamar has made some progress, but his cognitive impairment is making life very challenging. Lamar won't likely leave the hospital for a long time. And when he does, he will need full time care. He can't take care of himself."
Odom has been hospitalized since Oct. 13 after being found unconscious at the Love Ranch brothel in Crystal, Nevada. He is currently receiving treatment at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
The source said Odom is still unable to walk by himself and struggles to communicate verbally. The difficulties are attributed to the oxygen deprivation and strokes he suffered after his overdose.
The insider added that while Odom is a "fighter" and his estranged wife Khloé Kardashian has been "amazing" throughout the whole ordeal, he still has a life-long challenge ahead of him.
"Lamar has serious longterm and lasting issues," the source said. "His life will never be the same as it once was."
