A New York City cab driver will face the consequences of refusing to pick up Al Roker and his 13-year-old son in an incident the weather forecaster considers racial profiling.
The Taxi & Limousine Commission has ordered the cabbie to pay a $500 fine or attend a hearing where he could have his license suspended for up to 30 days, reports TMZ. It should be noted that the cabbie has a history of refusing to pick up customers; he was fined $200 in May for a similar case.
Roker detailed the event Saturday on Twitter, writing:
"Filed a complaint today after getting passed up again by a NYC Yellow cab. Cabbie picked up a white guy a block away. Wonder why Uber wins? This happens to folks of color every day. And while most cabbies do their job, there are those ignorant, racist ones who hurt the others What really hurts, my 13 yr. old boy was with me and asked why the cabbie passed us. I said, 'Nick, ignorant people make dumb choices' Hopefully @nyctaxi weeds out the bad apples. Looking forward to a hearing and dealing with this. I will keep you posted."
Upon hearing of the cab driver's fine, Roker told TMZ, "I appreciate the TLC's prompt attention to his matter and look forward to a proper resolution."
