Like many of her diva-contemporaries Mariah Carey is nimble in matters of throwing shade. But it seems that Mimi is trying to clear things up.
In an early 2000s television interview, the Grammy Award-winning entertainer was asked about how she felt about Beyonce Knowles and Jennifer Lopez. And while she praised Knowles as being "nice" and "a good writer," when it came to Lopez her answer was less expressive.
"I don't know her..." she said with an awkward smile. Ouch.
Fastforward to the present, and now Carey is trying to clear things up. In an interview with New York Magazine she dished on why she said what she said.
“Recently? I don’t know. [yawns] I’m sorry, I’m having a “sleep” moment…,” she says. “Well, there was a very interesting shirt that a fan made with a quote that I said years ago that, when I said it, I really wasn’t trying to be funny. I was just being honest and everybody’s kind of blowing it out of proportion but this guy had a shirt on and it was a picture of me that he made and the quote was underneath it -- and I’m going to leave you hanging as to what it was.”
Carey's perceived shade birthed millions of memes, and also sparked a rumored feud between the two that has latest nearly 15 years.
So what does J. Lo think of the alleged legacy of jabs?
“I don't have a feud against her at all. I know from back in the day, I've read things that she's said about me that were not the greatest, but we have never met,” Lopez told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live last year. "Like, we don't know each other. I think it's kind of from word of mouth of things that have happened in the past that I'm not really aware of. But I don't know."
