As we've seen time and time again, it can be tough for child stars to make the transition into adulthood. No one knows that struggle better than Nickelodeon star Kel Mitchell who recalls a "confusion moment" in which he dabbled in drugs and alcohol and had suicidal thoughts before giving his life to God.
In a new interview with PEOPLE, the 37-year-old actor/comedian discusses his dark days after "Kenan & Kel" went off the air, when work was scarce and his six-year marriage to Tyisha Hampton was ending. He admits that he was "suicidal" and "deep in sin" while dealing with the stresses of life.
"I felt like I'd hit a wall. I was like, 'Okay. I need to figure out what I need to do in my life.'" he said.
Mitchell explained that he found his way by returning to his faith and handing all his issues to a higher power. He became the stage manager at a non-denominational Christian church in Los Angeles.
"I was trying to figure it all out on my own. But what I needed to do was turn to Him," Mitchell said. "Once I found that clarity with Christ, I knew everything would work out. [...] I enjoy living this life. I don't let things frustrate or worry me anymore. I don't do that because I have peace in my heart. I have God."
Mitchell is now back on television with Nickelodeon's new sitcom "Game Shakers" and is touring the country doing stand-up and motivational speaking. In 2012, he tied the knot once again with designer and rapper Asia Lee.
