Three legendary comedians will get their just due Thursday night (Oct. 1) at Harlem's historic Apollo Theater.
Jackie "Moms" Mabley, Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx are set to be inducted into the theater's walk of fame in celebration of their outstanding accomplishments in the world of comedy. This will be the first time the Apollo Theater has inducted non-musical artists.
The ceremony will also mark the launch of the Apollo Comedy Club, which will feature up-and-coming comedians.
"It's about time someone other than a musical act has been inducted," Apollo Comedy Club curator Bob Sumner told The Root. "It's time for them and it's beautiful because, when you think of comedy, that's who you think of in so many different ways."
All three honorees have deep ties to the theater and will be remembered with items to represent each comic: a hat for Mabley, a red jacket for Pryor and a scotch glass and cigar for Foxx.
The late stars join a list of iconic inductees that include Michael Jackson, James Brown, Patti LaBelle, Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and others.
