A South Dakota man has been convicted of second-degree murder in the death of the two-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, reports The Associated Press.
Joseph Patterson, 29, was found guilty on Tuesday after a Lincoln County jury deliberated for more than five hours. He's also been convicted of first-degree manslaughter and aggravated battery in the October 2013 death of Tyrese Robert Ruffin (the son Patterson's girlfriend and Peterson).
Peterson said he only found out about his son two months before his death and had been in communication with the boy's mother to schedule a visit. When he learned of Ruffin's injuries, he said he rushed to South Dakota where he met the boy for the first time a day before he died.
An autopsy concluded Ruffin sustained multiple blows to the head, which caused his brain to bleed, and doctors determined the injuries could not have been accidental. The defense team maintained the young boy had chocked on a fruit snack and Patterson administered CPR.
Patterson faces life in prison and will be sentenced at a later date.
