Angelica Sweeting wants to help little black girls accept their beauty through Naturally Perfect Dolls

27 year-old mother and founder of Naturally Perfect Dolls, Angelica Sweeting decided that it was time for her two little girls to have dolls that looked like them. One day, during a drive with her children and husband, she and her husband over heard how their daughter Sophia was no longer happy with how she looked. She had mentioned how she wanted yellow hair and white skin, affected by the fact that she didn’t look like the doll that she constantly played with. From that moment, Angelica knew she needed to do something.

She decided to design her own doll, which would be a representation of little Black girls. The Angelica doll is created to help young Black girls accept and love their appearance. The doll is brown skinned, adorned with long kinky/coily hair, full lips and a wide nose. Angelica created the first doll this way, since she felt many young Black girls had these facial features. She and her husband even tested the hair, making sure it could sustain through twist outs, Bantu knots and braids, just like Black girls’ hair does.

Right now, Sweeting has a Kickstarter campaign running to help obtain funding to create a full line of dolls. You can support Angelica in her development by donating here
