After attending a fabulous birthday bash this weekend in Brooklyn, I noticed something very intriguing: all of my friends and peers had a very strong sense of personal style and a signature look.
It was a refreshing sight to see: women of all shapes and sizes comfortable in their bodies and showing off their fashion senses. From tomboy chic to urban posh to Brooklyn pinup girl, the endless amount of Black women rocking their signature looks was just so inspiring to see.
I’ve always wondered how important having style was; signature style to be precise. Being the non-fashion fashionable girl was always my thing. It’s like, I didn’t care about clothes, but I cared about how I looked in them. Once I found the perfect pair of jeans, I wore them until I couldn’t anymore. My favorite look this summer (and probably for summers to come) was the 70s inspired jumper. Give me that and a pair of block heels and I’m ready. I’ve finally figured out what looks fabulous on me, what colors I like and what energy I want to exude when I walk into a room and I’m hoping that other women start to feel compelled to do the same and here’s three reasons why:
You’ll be able to really understand your body
The moment you decide to understand your body type will probably also be the moment you understand what looks best on you. While we love to see women taking on new and different trends, having a great understanding of what looks best on your figure will really aid you in purchasing the best clothes for your shape.
You’ll feel empowered to express your true self via fashion
It’s pretty much a known fact that while you are what you eat, you also are what you wear. Finding your signature style will also empower you to show the world who you are without having to say much. If you’re an eclectic woman who loves to travel, you may show this through various prints and textures inspired by cultures you’ve been exposed to. If you’re a chic tomboy, you probably will be the first one to match up a sexy pencil skirt with a fitted cap. The point is, you’ll be able to show up and feel confident in having your clothes say who you are and what you’re here to represent for you.
You’ll find yourself feeling confident in everyday experiences
When we feel like we love and know ourselves, it shows in everyday moments. A big part of that comes from our fashion and how we present ourselves. If you know that you want to be the CEO of a company one day, you’ll feel confident dressing like one. If you know you want to be a fashion blogger, you’ll be excited to show off the newest trends when you’re out and about. The key word here is confidence. No matter what you want to represent to the world, you’ll be confident enough to do this via your signature style, and that just fabulous.
