For all you fashion "bloggers" and "insiders" looking to score front row seats at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in February and beyond, the task just got a tad bit harder with new changes coming down from event executives.
IMG Fashion, who heads the annual showcase, announced Thursday a set of plans that will drastically change Fashion Week as we know it (or at least as we've come to know in recent years). In response to a growing number of designers' complaints, the bi-annual event will work to update venues and show formats, as well as cut down on the cluster of attendees with little to no ties to fashion.
"It was becoming a zoo," said Catherine Bennett, senior vice president and managing director at IMG Fashion Events and Properties. "What used to be a platform for established designers to debut their collections to select media and buyers has developed into a cluttered, often cost-prohibitive and exhausting period for our industry to effectively to business."
IMG asserts the changes will "[make] invitations once again an exclusive pass for true fashion insiders" with the guest list cut by 20 percent. Tough break for B-list celebrities, out-of-place journalists, street-style photographers and self-described fashionistas.
The revamped event will also be more accessible to designers with redesigned venues at the Lincoln Center, as well as newly-constructed spaces that will be cost-effective. With big brand shows surpassing the $1 million mark, these changes will take a huge burden off event participants.
Can they pull it off by February? Let's hope so. It's high time that New York Fashion Week get back to the basics and eliminate all the distracting (and unnecessary) bells and whistles.
