3 Ways to Whiten Your Teeth, Naturally

Say cheese, girl!

I’ll be honest: I’m scared to use teeth whitening strips. I’ve seen women use them and watch the magic happen, but I’ve also heard horror stories about over the counter products that whiten your teeth. So, my hunt for natural ways to get bright pearly whites happened yesterday, and I wanted to share some of the cool, natural alternatives I found.

First of all, let me say that after all of my research, the apparent key to having whiter teeth is to prevent them from becoming stained. But of course, food and soda and other juices don’t allow our teeth to be great. The biggest reason our teeth stain is because the enamel gets broken down, helping to reveal yellow dentin underneath. So, the more you can prevent this erosion, the better the chance you’ll have a great white smile.

But, you’ve probably surpassed the prevention stage; so, let’s get to the solutions. Here are three ways you can whiten your teeth at home, naturally.

Use a baking soda and lemon juice paste

The sodium bicarbonate (the official name for baking soda) gently breaks down surface stains while the lemon juice acts as a natural bleach. The baking soda is also very alkaline, which is the opposite of being acidic. This is a good thing! Acid in your mouth can help erode your teeth, but the alkaline nature of baking soda can help balance out your mouths PH, creating a healthier environment for your teeth altogether.

Here’s how you can use this mixture:

Mix several teaspoons of baking soda and enough lemon juice together to make a paste. Apply the paste to your teeth with a toothbrush and let it sit for 2 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly with water.

Use coconut oil to “oil pull”

You may or may not have heard of oil pulling, but it’s becoming a very big trend for people looking to cleanse their mouth and whiten teeth. Apparently, this trend has been used widely for some decades around the world. While oil pulling won’t “bleach” your teeth, it will aid in ridding your mouth of bacteria that helps make them yellow. It’ll also freshen your breath!

All you have to do get a tablespoon of coconut oil, put it in your mouth and swish around for about 10 minutes. It’s hard to do, so don’t feel bad if you look silly. After that, rinse out with water and brush your teeth.

Use a strawberry scrub

The most popular is one that is combined with mashed strawberries, salt and baking soda. But some people even just use mashed strawberries as the scrub alone. Why? Because strawberries are high in vitamin C, and help break down plaque than can cause your teeth to become yellow. It also contains an enzyme called malic acid and that helps to remove surface stains.

If you’re willing to do the salt, strawberry and baking soda scrub, all you’ll need to do is mix mashed strawberries, ½ teaspoon of baking soda and a pinch of salt together and apply to your teeth. Let it sit for 5 minutes and then rinse.
