This is for the women who have never worn a bit of makeup a day in their lives, but want to. We’re not trying to force you to wear anything you don’t want to. All we want to do is give you the option of knowing how to apply your makeup if you have to.
Buy as many cheap lipsticks as you want (or can)
This is the fun part. Well, you may get annoyed when you spend $5 on lipstick that doesn’t work out for you, but you’ll get over it. I suggest you buying cheap lipsticks first because you won’t feel as bad if the color doesn’t work. Plus, the goal is to start with the cheap lip colors, so that when you go to invest in the pricier ones, you’ll know exactly what to look for.
Buy as many cheap types of mascara as you can afford to
Again, this is for test-driving purposes only. What I want you to do is read the labels. Mascaras are created for purposes like curling, defining, lengthening, voluminizing, etc. They’re not created to be cute; they’re created to work. Cheap mascaras may not last long, but they’ll show you how each purpose works (or doesn’t work for your lashes). Once you find a mascara that makes your lashes look the way you want them to, hold on to it. If you happen to want a high end matching product, take that mascara to a department store and tell someone you “want a mascara that does what this one does, but with a better formula”.
Call MAC (or head to a department store or Sephora) for a tutorial
Go with a girlfriend, so that she can record the person doing your makeup. Seriously. This will come in handy for you when you head home to do the next step.
What you want to ask the makeup artists as a newbie is guidance on three things:
-Finding your best foundation
-Finding your best mauve blush
-Finding the easiest eyeliner to play with
-How to apply them all
If you can get these basics down in the beginning, you can learn to master your face when it comes to makeup. This is because the right foundation will create a clean, smooth canvas. Every woman should have a good mauve (berry) blush that compliments her complexion. This is because berry blushes are multi-seasonal and never go out of style. Lastly, once you have the best eyeliner to play with, you’ll know how to add drama to your eyes, thus transforming your look without a hassle.
Go home, and practice
Pick a day where you have not a damn thing to do, and just practice. You’ll look crazy the first couple of attempts. But, the more you do this, the better you’ll get. Plus, if you’ve followed my directions above, you would have recorded your tutorial on how to apply your foundation, blush and liner.
Incorporate one, small bold makeup trend when you start to feel comfortable
Whether it’s the trend of wearing orange blush or metallic shadows, what you’ll want to do is step out of your comfort zone, slowly. It may be that you finally work up the nerve to find your perfect red lipstick. The point of this is not to make you a trendsetter, but to help you embrace different ways you can make yourself look or feel enhanced. A lot of us look at celebrities and say “Ugh, if I could only rock that trend”. But the truth is, you can. You just have to know how to rock certain trends on your face.
