The Only Summer Beauty Products You Really Need

During this season less is more, and more is just too damn hot...

Summer is the season of elimination and minimalism when it comes to beauty and skin care. Less is more, and more is just too damn hot. You need simplicity and results. So, let’s get straight to the point. Here are the 10 products you really only need to look fresh and fabulous during the hot simmering days.

SPF 30 (or higher) Daily Moisturizer:

Yes, Black women: we need sun protection, too. Get your hands on a good daily moisturizer with an SPF of 30 or higher, and apply 30 minutes before you apply your makeup (and your mattifying gel). Try Josie Maran’s Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47 or Cetaphil’s Daily Facial Moisturizer of SPF 50.

Mattifying Gel:

After a good cleanse in the morning, apply a mattifying gel to your skin, like the First Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Oil-Free Mattifying Gel, to absorb any excess oils and hydrate your skin. This will prep your skin for any makeup you’re getting ready to put on, and help the makeup last longer throughout the day.

Lightweight foundation (preferably with SPF):

Keep it light, and if you can, make sure it protects you against sun damage. You can never have too much SPF protection for your face. Go for an illuminating foundation, like YSL’s Le Teint Touche Eclat SPF 19 for a nighttime glow, or Make Up For Ever’s Mat Velvet + Matifying Foundation during the day. Another great option is Bobbi Brown’s Long Wear Even Finish Foundation. It has an SPF of 15 and offer long lasting coverage for about 6 hours.

Waterproof eyeliner:

Eyeliner can easily transform your beauty look. Purchase a really good liner that’s waterproof. Actually, keep one in your desk at work and one in your most used purse. Our favorite: the Kat Von D Ink Liner.

Everyday blush:

It’ll warm your skin and add that final touch of “yes” to your look! Opt for a metallic mauve, like Topshop’s blush in Aorta or go bold with an orange hue brushed against the apples of your cheeks. A really good color for most complexions is the NARS blush in Exhibit A.

Waterproof mascara:

This is self-explanatory. Just take your pick from our top three selections! Try the Lancome Hypnose Drama Waterproof mascara for super intense, dark lashes. For a lengthening mascara, play around with Benefit Cosmetic’s They’re Real mascara. Want an added curl for the sexy batted eye? Try Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Black Pearl Waterproof mascara.

Effective cleanser:

You want a cleanser that will remove all of the gunk and residue from your skin, as well as your makeup. Our tops picks go to the fresh Soy Face Cleanser and the Body Shop’s Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter.

Calming toner:

Toner is the ultimate last step to a clean, hydrated face. Use a cotton ball to rub a layer of toner after cleaning your face thoroughly. For women with sensitive skin, we recommend the fresh Rose Floral Toner. For women with oily skin, try Olay’s Oil Minimizing Skin Toner.

Facial oil:

For a good nighttime hydration, slather on 3 drops of your favorite facial oil and rest up while your skin absorbs the moisture. Our favorite: Boots Botanics 100% Organic Facial Oil.

The perfect lip color:

We know most women have their favorite lipsticks and glosses already. And that’s fine. But, may we introduce you to Ciate’s Lip Chalk Matte Lip Crayon? It’s the most hydrating, matte lipstick we’ve tried thus far and we’re pretty much in love.
