Not everyone was over the moon about Lupita Nyong’o as the new face of Lancome. Enter Nigerian-Cameroonian pop singer Dencia, founder of skin care line Whitenicious.
Dencia made headlines a few months back for her new Whitenicious skin care line that focuses on skin lightening. The creator and spokesmodel of the brand has undergone her own transformation from Naomi Campbell brown to Katy Perry pale. But Whitenicious sold out like hotcakes at $50-$150 a pop.
Before Lancome, Nyong'o was vocal about the importance of young girls learning to love their dark skin. Her entire speech at Essence’s Women in Hollywood luncheon was about dark beauty. Well, that wasn’t good enough for Dencia.
The singer took to Twitter to criticize Nyong'o and tweeted, “& oh @Lupita_Nyongo cln't talk abt the bleaching creams white people (Companies) make cuz the white man pays her, they own her!!”
That was a month ago, pre-Lancome. Post-Lancome Dencia still had her critiques. When someone tweeted Dencia that she’d lost and Lupita won because of Lancome she said, “But they sell bleaching cream tho RT @IamNappyBaby: @IamDencia bi-ch lupita is the new face of Lancôme!! SHE WINS!! And you're just TRASH.”
Lupita has yet to respond.
