ESSENCE's May Beauty issue features three unique, stylish, natural-haired singers

ESSENCE showed out with its three covers featuring Erykah Badu, Ledisi and Solange for the May Beauty issue!

Let’s start with the fact that ESSENCE chose not one, not two, but THREE natural hair women to rock the beauty issue. It says a lot about redefining the world’s standard of beauty— waif, pale, blonde hair, blue eyes. These gorgeous women are everything but that.

Badu, Solange and Ledisi all have very different body types as well. The representation of curvy and petite is truly how beauty should be defined. Each of their musical and fashion styles are unique to them as individuals, which is exactly why ESSENCE chose them for the May beauty issue.

“At ESSENCE, we're all about celebrating individual beauty, and that's exactly what comes to mind with the three women gracing the cover of our May issue: Erykah Badu, Ledisi and Solange. Each of these artists have captivated audiences not only with their songs, but also with their style and beauty. And for each of them, it's always about self-expression,” the magazine’s website wrote.

On the baby blue background each woman is serving face with splashes of color. And the hair! It’s bold, it pops, it dazzles, it’s Black, it’s us.

Ledisi is loving life with a new album and new love. She tells the magazine, “Although I'm known for my long, colorful locs, I still don't take my hair too seriously. I experiment a lot, dyeing it and constantly switching styles to grab attention. My hair is one of my best accessories and changing it helps express who I am."

Solange, who has blossomed into fashion’s ‘it girl’ for the past couple of years, says, "We all have the option of how we want to express ourselves through our life, hair, style or whatever we decide. We shouldn't be pigeonholed into any one category.”

As the new face of Givenchy, Badu says she views her style as functional art, but she’s not trying to make a statement. "I view my hair and clothes as functional art. I'm my own stylist and I love it, but I am not trying to make a statement."
