Should Women Start Wearing Less Makeup?

Beyonce's makeup-free Instagram picture reminds us there's nothing like a woman's natural beauty

Beyonce recently posted a picture on her Instagram (shown above) of her lying in bed with a pleasantly bare face as she playfully smiles for the camera. The Houston beauty, who's often praised as one of the most stunning women in the world, left no caption under the photo, though there was none needed for it spoke for itself.

Very rarely does the public get a chance to see some of Hollywood’s brightest starlets without makeup. In an industry consumed with stars and a rather slanted view of what beauty is, it’s refreshing whenever megastars like Bey decides to let the world in on what they really look like underneath the pounds of makeup they wear on a daily basis.

Though tabloids and paparazzi tend to ridicule and embarrass celebs whenever they’re caught out and about without their makeup (especially when they don’t look as flattering), it’s important for women and young girls to see these images because it’s a sobering reminder that celebrities are still regular women underneath all that foundation and concealer, and that sometimes makeup hides the true woman within.

Hopefully, Beyonce’s makeup-free snap will encourage other women to embrace more of their natural look. While makeup is a great way to enhance one’s beauty, celebrity culture has conditioned many women into thinking that without makeup they are not beautiful.

Not only are most women more beautiful without a ton of makeup on their face, but most men actually prefer women who have a more natural look, according to quite a few surveys conducted over the years. Makeup can be deceitful in the eyes of a man who thinks he’s getting to know one woman but then wakes up to a completely different woman the next morning. According to a small survey done by The Huffington Post, men even prefer for women not to wear lipstick because they find it to be off-putting and a distraction, not to mention it doesn’t make for the best experience when kissing.

There are even more practical reasons for toning down on the makeup like its possible health risks, especially when not applied correctly, not to mention if you don’t take good care of your skin it can cause acne and breakouts.

With more and more Black women, in particular, revolting against relaxers and the straightening comb, it isn’t farfetched to think that one day women will soon rebel against makeup too - okay, maybe not. But hopefully women will begin to appreciate and love the skin they’re in without the excessive use of cosmetics.
